Healing from chronic illnesses; creating as I go

About me:

I am Kayleigh Skye Esplin, a 23 year old emerging artist from Angus, Scotland.
My work is largely conceptual as I want my paintings to convey meaning and strong emotion.
I have something to say, a story to tell and my artwork is my voice.

Firstly, I am keen to raise awareness of chronic illness and really show the misunderstood difficult time it brings. On the other hand, I feel compelled to showcase the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. I am incredibly passionate about healthy living and functional medicine, while I question many conventional approaches to health and other aspects of life. My art in the near future will make the viewer ponder and question their own beliefs.

I have an obsession with using symbolism in my work. I use animals, flowers, seasons, colours- anything- to express extra meaning into my paintings. This sometimes gives my art a surreal feel and I enjoy how it makes each piece unique.
The last few years I have been exploring ideas with portraiture. Manipulating the face, changing the sizes of features, elongating and stretching, highlighting particular features for my desired effect. I portray this in some of my portraits while creating others that are proportionally correct.

Recently I have been channelling my inner Gok Wan and have combined my passion for fashion and accessories along with illustration techniques in my artwork. This creates really quirky modern portraits that hold bags of personality.

I mainly work digitally on an iPad Pro using Procreate to make detailed artworks which can be printed on a large scale. However, I also create small-scale manual paintings using a mix of mediums, mostly acrylic paints.
